client information
See the what next ? section for information about your initial assessment and how on-going sessions are organised.
assessment session
Your initial appointment is a face to face assessment session with a counsellor, who will talk with you for 1 hour. Some people find that this initial session is all they need to clear their thinking, help them decide what to do and that no further counselling is necessary.
You and the counsellor will talk through how we might be able to help and plan a way forward. It is just as important that you feel comfortable with your counsellor, as it is that your counsellor feels able to work with you. If together we decide that the Listening Room cannot provide the appropriate help, we can provide details of alternative agencies that may be more useful.
ongoing sessions
We will organise on-going 1 hour counselling sessions, ideally once a week. We have found that by attending regular hourly sessions, clients can achieve more than if they just attend on an ad hoc basis. It also provides evidence, to all those involved, that everyone is committed to the counselling process.
There may be times when you are unable to make your session and we will look to accommodate any changes if we can. We also recognise that not every client will be able to commit to such a rigid structure, if for example work commitments prevent weekly sessions. Or you may prefer to switch to an online session if you or your partner are regularly working away from home, or you are based at different locations. Providing we know in advance, we will always try to find suitable alternatives.
Counselling will continue as long as you and the counsellor think it is helpful. The number of sessions depends on you, but typically we would see most clients over four to ten sessions.
fees and payment
All our couples counselling / relationship counselling sessions are charged at £70 per hour. This can be paid by cash, cheque or BACS and is payable at the end of each session.
late/cancellations/re-scheduling
Please call us if you think that you are going to arrive late. We’ll try to move your session around if we can, but your session may still have to finish at the usual time, so as not to delay the next clients. If your counsellor is unavailable for a scheduled session, they will give you as much notice as possible. Please make sure you provide up to date contact details.
Please let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you want to cancel or rearrange your session. If you do cancel or miss a session with less than 24 hours notice, a 50% fee is payable.
confidentiality and data protection
The trust between client and counsellor is crucial to the success of the therapeutic process and we treat all disclosed information as confidential. Records do not identify your name, they are kept securely and are subject to the Data Protection Act 1998 and to the new General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) which comes into force from May 2018. We do not share your details with any third party without your permission. However, if in the counsellor’s opinion you are a danger either to yourself or to others, we do reserve the right to inform appropriate agencies. In addition confidentiality can be offered only within accepted legal boundaries. It is our practice whenever possible to inform you first should confidentiality need to be breached.
supervision
Good therapeutic practice requires counsellors to undertake regular supervision of cases. Supervisors are experienced counsellors trained to oversee the counselling process. Supervision can be seen as a form of quality control and a way of ensuring that therapeutic standards are maintained. All information is treated confidentially by supervisors.
